Catalogue No. 2186
This is an early 18th century (c.1730) red walnut chest of drawers. Red walnut or Virginian walnut was used for only a narrow period of time (c.1710-1750). English Walnut was mainly used before this time and mahogany became the preferred wood after 1750 due to availability and fashion. The chest stands on its original bracket feet and is fitted with two short and three long drawers. The drawer linings are constructed in oak. The drawer fronts are fitted with later replacement pierced brass handles. The edge of the top is moulded with re-entrant corners (a feature of this period of furniture). The chest is a good warm and mellow colour and has only a couple of old repairs to the rails, commensurate with age and usage.
